We got back to the ship and we sailed and crossed the Esna Lock.
A lock is a device for raising and lowering boats between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways. The distinguishing feature of a lock is a fixed chamber whose water level can be varied; whereas in a caisson lock, a boat lift, or on a canal inclined plane, it is the chamber itself (usually then called a caisson) that rises and falls. The Esna Lock: every year Esna Lock is closed for maintenance from the 1st and 15th of December and June. During this period the cruises are made from Esna to Aswan and vice versa and the visits of Luxor are done by bus from Esna.
The Nile harbors at times get very crowded and the ships have to park beside each other, sometimes 5-6 in a row.

Locks are used to make a river more easily navigable, or to allow a canal to take a reasonably direct line across country that is not level.
I watched this from my cabin. It was pretty interesting. Then I headed up to the dining room for lunch.
Lunch was nothing to write home about. I got a plate full of french fries and that was it. They're weren't the greatest - no bacon grease.
I decided to stay in the cabin tonight and watch a movie. I watched Whiteout. It was pretty good. I couldn't get an internet connection, so that was the next best thing.
While watching that, the cabin steward came in and asked did I need anything. You know what I wanted to say, but didn't. "Yeah, you all have any white linen?" He asked what I was watching and I told him. He said that he'd seen the movie before. He says, "strong woman." All the while I'm saying to myself, "find me some damned clean linen."
Tonight was the Galabyia Party. Some people in our group had the most beautiful galabyia's some looked very expensive. I wasn't going to any party. I was trying to get some sleep. I filled in my postcards and called it a night.
