Just a quick update to let you all know what we have been up to for the last few days.... I'm (Heather) writing this from an internet cafe in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) while Alex is researching some flights for later in the trip.
After a lazy day in Sihanoukville on Friday, we went to a few beach bars in the evening and Alex finished off the day by winning $20 at the casino!
The next day was a long bus ride, everyone feeling a bit worse for wear after the night before! But our hang-overs were cured when we arrived in Phnom Penh and went out for lunch where we ate tarantula!!! I managed one leg while Alex ate the whole thing! It actually tasted suprisingly nice!
We then spent the afternoon visiting the Tuol Sleng Prison (S 21) which is a former school that was used for the torture and killing of thousands of Cambodians during the reign of Pol Pot from 1975-79. There were very graphic photos and much of the torture equipment was still in place. Anyone who survived torture here was then taken outside Phnom Penh to the Killing Fields. After seeing the prison we went to the Killing Fields, where they have dug up a number of the mass graves and the skulls of the bodies have been placed in a huge stupa nearby, over 8000 in total. We walked around the frields, where there are still bones sticking out of the ground and pieces of material from the clothing of the people killed.
We had a lazy morning on the Sunday, and spent the rest of the day around Phnom Penh, visiting the Russian Market, very hot, crowded and smelly; the National Meuseum, full of statues from all over Cambodia, which was very interesting and set in an amazing building; and we walked around the Palace.
We ended our stay in Cambodia with a fantastic meal at a restaurant looking over the Tonle Sap river.
We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City this afternoon, and spent the afternoon relaxing drinking beer and playing pool. We have also booked a place on a Mekong Delta tour tomorrow which takes us to a number of small islands as well as trying local food and drink. We will update in a few days time....
