3/5/08 We woke up in the carpark in Hervey Bay, where we had parked for the night, to find a beautiful sunny day - and a huge sign saying 'Trespassers will be prosecuted'!!! I quickly jumped into the front of the van and drove out of the carpark onto the road - the boys both still in bed!! Stopped off at Woolworths for some food shopping and ate our breakfast in the carpark, getting some funny looks and comments! We left Harvey Bay and headed towards Alexandra...

We drove into Hervey Bay around sunset once again and were confronted by a sprawling mass of neon lights epitomised by the bright yellow of McDonalds and the red of KFC. Right, we arrived in Airlie Beach (famous for being the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands) around sunset on the 22nd. We pulled up into the caravan park recommended in our site book and found that it was a pretty un-organised hole. We were given a map that did not actually resemble the park and it took us about half an hour to actually find our berth. After doing that we just headed to the internet cafe to upload our photos on to CD's as we had met so many people...

We picked up our campervan, a Toyota Hiace (rented from Camperman Australia) on 12th April. We were shown how everything in the van works - it has a table which folds down into a double bed and a shelf above which can fold into a single bunk. It also has a microwave, grill, 2 gas hobs and a fridge along with some small cupboards for food storage. For the trip from Alice Springs to Cairns we went on a bus called the 'Desert Venturer'. This involved a 3 day road trip across the outback, travelling mainly on long straight dirt roads with empty horizons in all directions!
