Hervey Bay/Fraser Island
Day 4 - Survived the over night bus pretty well, I got 2 seats to myself after about 3 hours which was a god send as I was able to sleep most of the way. So other than the coach being a little bit smelly after all that time, it wasnt too bad a journey! Got to my hostel about 10am and it was sooooo hot. Went straight to the poolside, got my first sun lounger on this WHOLE TRIP and just chilled out until 3pm when it started to pour. I think the rain is following me!! :( Everyone in the hostel seemed a little bit cliquey, so I had my dinner, a drink and went to bed at about half 8, only to discover that I had burnt 3 strips across my bum from where Id sat on a bench and it had rubbed off!! It was really red. So had to lie on my bed just rubbing after sun in for a while...
Day 5 - 7am start, grabbed some toast (turned out I actually had to pay for this, didnt realise, thought it was free like in Airlie Beach, so didnt pay lol) and waited for my pick up out the fron of the hostel. Met Courtney from California, immediately got on like a house on fire! (Prob not funny given Victoria of late..) So we headed off to the harbour to catch our boat to Fraser Island on the "Cool Dingo" tour. When we got on the bus on the other side, we were told we had to wear our seat belts as we were going "4x4ing"... We were initially dubious that this was possible in a BUS, but when we looked at it at the first stop it was actually more like a truck with seats! Our tour guide Hayden was absoultely hilarious. When we got to the top of where the off road bit started, he said he wanted to play us a little "tune" to set the mood..... On came "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE SOME DAY!!!" as we careered down this MASSIVE hill flying over bumps, we soon found out why he called it the rollercoaster!! Nearly died laughing it was so much fun. After that we went on a 4.5km walk through the sub tropical rainforest dodging funnel web spider holes, giant lizards, MASSIVE march flies and other interesting things.. I was just freaking out a little.... Got to Lake McKenzie, a perched dune lake (check me out ;) ) which was amazing. Had a few hours there playing in the water and sun bathing, then back to the resort, where there was a power cut :( It wasnt as bad as we thought, we made the most of it in the dingo bar and it finally came back on at about midnight by which point most of us were in bed! We wondered what tomorrow whould hold....
Day 6 - Power was still on at our lodges, but hasnt been restored to the main resort so we were all charging stuff incase it goes!! Today headed out to the other side of the island to 75mile beach. This is actually a registered highway, its mental, has speed limits and police etc who can issue tickets!! We made our way to the first stop at Eli Creek which was where the water table flowed out to the sea. Water was a little cold to paddle in but we wandered up to the end of the wooden walk way. Saw a green python just lying in the grass at the end. The tour guides had taken the piss the day before with a fake one so one welsh guy threw a leaf at it to see if it was real, IT WAS!! We all backed off a little lol. Then at the other end of the path there was a golden orb spider, sent shivers down my spine it was so big. We got back onto the bus, headed down the beach and next thing we know, the bus breaks down!!! Just stops in the middle of the beach/highway!! Expect the unexpected was what Courtney and I decided was the theme for this trip!! We hung out on the beach, played footie, cricket, attack the tour guide, dodge the march fly, and sunbathed for 2.5hrs until the new bus arrived... Pictures of tour guide trying to get phone signal on top of the broken down bus summed it up!! We got back on and it was onto Indian Head, 120m climb to the top, amazing views, then the champagne rock pools, coloured sands and home after a tiring day. We came across a fallen tree on our return journey, all the boys had to get off and move it before we could continue, was like something out of jurassic park!! Dinner and drinks ($10 cocktail jug!!), then bed at 10 was the story of the evening...
