I finally got here then, T5 was fairly uneventful, plane left on time, it was easy to find my way around, and my luggage got there, thankfully!! I was sat next to a nice scottish couple who accompanied me thru Joburg airport as they were transferring as well. Whilst waiting at the gate I met Ines from Norway who was going to Antelope Park as well, we then ended up sitting next to each other the plane so that was good, we passed thru immigration easily and I managed to get away with not having my bag searched, they went thru everyone elses but looked at mine and decided it was too much effort, haha!
We were met at the airport by Christine who then took us to her hostel, Ines and I were given an apartment with lounge kitchen, the whole lot, it was really nice and we spent the rest of the day sunbathing. We were watching a film later on and realised there was a huge spider in the room (see photos - when i put them up!!) but it was too big to move so we just had to shut the door and ignore it!
The next day we got the bus from Bulawayo to Gweru and were met by Ben who had some errands to do in town so we got a good look at Gweru, saw the ques at cash machines and people walking round with wads of money. Apart from this everyone is fine, all in good spirits and just very patient, waiting for 'the change' as they say!
First day at AP and we got shown around and then went on a lion walk in the afternoon, its so amazing, really surreal when the lions come out of the enclosures and walk up to you. This first walk was with Luangwa and Msasa, who are both around 15 months and are big lions, its so cool you can just walk with a lion next to you with your hand on its back.
Next day we went on a lion walk in the morning with Chaka, Nduna and Nandi, Chaka is amazing, hes so friendly, i've got loads of photos of him because he's so adorable. We then went on a walk with the babys, Sango, Swahilli and Sahara who are 6months old. These are soooo cute, still really playful but big enough to remind you that they are lions! At lunch we went on an elephant swim which was so much fun, you ride the elephants hanging on the guide in front and the elephant goes under the water with you hanging on to his back, he keeps his truck up to breathe and goes in and out of the water. It was quite scary at the time because its really hard to stay on but its so much fun! In the afternoon we watched a film about the project explaining why and how they're doing what they're doing and then walked Lozi and Mana, brother and sister of Luangwa and Msasa, Lozi is a bit naughty and often stalks people so you have to keep your eye on him but he's still adorable!
We've also done some fence making, and meat prep where you have to cut pockets in the meat in and rub some powder in, which is nutrients and vitamins for the lions, this is pretty gross, we had 4legs and some ribs from a cow, (with all the skin, hooves etc!)
Hope everyone is ok back home, miss you all!
