Hi everyone,
We have just had the most amazing morning sea kayaking. Alarms sounded at 5.45am, needless to say we didn't all jump out of bed, all we wanted to do was catch up on sleep from Fraser. We got up and were ready for our guide Bryon at 6am! Got in the truck and headed up to the lookout to see if we could spy any whales. Had no luck so just went straight down onto the beach. Drove along the beach for what seemed like ages trying to see dolhins or whales with no luck, then finally someone spotted a blow hole of a dolphin and they weren't that far out. Stopped the car and got the kayaks off the roof.
With minimal briefing, we were in the water, Lyd and I in one and Rose with another girls. Managed to battle our way through the waves and then it was head for the whales. Paddled for ages and couldn't see them, then we saw them about 200m off. Weaved our way in closer, we were a group of 5 kayaks. Lost them again for a while and then, there they were, mother and calf no more that 50m away. Sat and bobbed around for ages watching them. Saw the full extent of the mother as she brought her back out the water, she was huge. At one point they were no more than 15m from us, i can't describe how magical it was, for ages she had her tail in the air and the calf was feeding from her. When the calf was finished it swam around her, coming out the water, the calf was bigger than the kayaks. Stayed with them for at least half an hour and they were not fussed in the slightest, in the end they moved off and we let them go.
After they had gone we started to make our way back inland, its surprising how far we had paddled, it must have been over 2km out. On our way back in we came across 2 dolphins, which we followed for a bit until they split up and went in different directions. A few times one came right out the water.
By the time we got back to land it was only 9am, not bad for a days work, it was tiring though but totally worth it. Lyd and I some how managed to not capsize coming in, we made our retreat onto land when the biggest 3 waves came, but we managed to surf them out with Lyd's experience, have to say i was screaming quite a bit! We all thoughly enjoyed ourselves and it was well worht getting up for!
Going to spent the afternoon, chilling by the pool and getting ready for leaving tomorrow. We catch the 10am bus from here to Brisbane tomorrow where we are going to stay with Rose's relatives for a day and then its Byron Bay all the way!
Can't believe i have only got a week left with these guys.
Love Hayley and Rose x
