Hi everyone.
We ended Monday evening by meeting up with Ollie, who we met on the South East Aisa tour. He has been working in Cairns for the past few months. We went down to the pier and found this lovely little fish restaurant, 'Tha Fish'. No expence sapared for Rose and I, we had the full 3 courses! It was gorgeous! Topped the evening off by taking some night photos along the espalade.
Tuesday morning came around all too quickly and we were on the mini bus up to Cape Tribulation. It took us the whole morning to travel up to Cape Trubulation. On the way we stopped on the Daintree River to go Croc Spotting. At first it was hard to spot them but once your eyes focused we saw lost of salt water juveniles. Further up the river me saw Scarface, so called after a fight with the other dominant croc futher up the river. The first time we saw him we only saw the top og his head, but when we came back to look he was out on the bank basking so you could see the full 4m of him, pretty impressive! We both could have stayed on the river all day, it was beautiful but all to quickly our hour was up and we were back on the bus!
The second stop we made before we reached out accommodation was to do a boadwalk through the ancient rainforest, now a heritage site. It was pretty awesome walking amongst the plants and the trees. There were walking trees, if they don't like the conditions they are in they are able to send out another root system from another branch, and in years they can move metres. There were some spikey looking ferns and root systems sticking up through the mangroves called snorkles. There were also vicious strangling plants, that once attached to their host become a parasite and kill in, leaving a pretty cool cast where the former tree was.
By 1pm we had reached our accommodation, which was a really nicely laid out resort with wooden cabins and a swimming pool. All of which was situated on the beach, so what better way to spend the afternoon with the sun shining then hitting the beach. The beach was glorious, with the ancient heritage rainforest coming down to meet the sea. And because only people from the hostle used the beach it was quiet - paradise! After a nice relaxing afternoon, neither of use felt like cooking so we ate in the bar in the evening, accompanied by a few drinks.
Wednesday morning we went snorkling with Ocean Safari. They guys that took us were really professional and had a great sense of humour. Spent the whole morning on McKay reef, snorlkiling in different location. The visibility wasn;t 100 percent but the diversity of fish and corals was great. As the guy Benie said you aren;t snorkling on the good or reasonably good barrier reef, you are snorkling on the Great Barrier Reef. They were very strict about touching or hitting the corals, because the greatest killer of the corals is snorkle fins. The snorkling was good, managed to see loads of fish and some rays, despite my mask filling up with water, apparently my face is extra small so i needed a kids one but they had all gone! Had an eventful drive back to shore, boys and there toys, we were on an inflatable speed boat thing that could go pretty fast!
Arrived back at Cape Trib Beach House just in time to catch the mini bus back to Cairns. Made a few stops on the way back. The first was at Alexander Look Out which had amazing view of the coast line. Next stop was Mossan Gorge, which was too crowded to enjoy its beauty, the kids are on holidays here for 2 weeks so the place was covered with them! The last stop before we hit Cairns was Port Douglas, another resort town, we had a quick change to look around the shops. Recieved a text while we were there to say that Lydia had been delayed 24 hours in Hong Kong because of a typhon! Not good news and left us feeling a bit deflated because we thought we were going to have a big reunion in the evening. After that we just had a quite evening and had an early night, catching up on all the sleep we lost in Miles!
