Collectivo from San Juan to Rivas, which we shared with an american chap. Bus from there, across the costa rican border (involving usual money changing battles, and hauling our bags off the bus and carrying it miles only for the customs person to give it a cursory glance and wave it away). Some food on the costa rican side gave us our first indication of how much more expensive costa rica is compared to Nicaragua (very!). Hopped off the bus at barranca with an Aussie couple also on their way to Montezuma - funnily they had heard of our Cuban police experience from some South Africans we met in Guatemala a few weeks back. Local bus to Puntarenas, followed by a brisk 2km stroll, the ferry to paquera, a local bus then minibus to Montezuma. After our first choice accommodation seemed to be closed (quite a few things are due to low season), found some lovely looking rooms right on the beach - given it was dark, couldn't tell quite how lovely until the morning. Italian restaurant with the Aussies. Bed, listening to the sound of lapping waves.
