Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge (and a bit of Mountain Rescue)
In a moment of insanity we decided we needed a hiking challenge in preparation for our 5 day trek to Machu Picchu planned in June.
We climbed the three Yorkshire peaks, Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, in under 12 hours! (But only successfully made it down from two..)
Halfway up the second peak we realised this was not practise for Machu Picchu; this was a marathon with three mountains to climb, with sun, rain, wind, fog and snow, with vertical ice climbs, bogs and rivers to jump.
And we were three high maintenance hikers with a broken compass.
BUT we made it, and that's all that matters (so Mountain Rescue told us).
So despite getting lost in a white out on the final peak, we proudly climbed our first three mountains ever, and all on the same day.
Our determination (some say stubbornness but who are they to judge), backpacks full of snacks, and Taylor Swift helped us overcome a challenge none of us were prepared for (map-reading what's that?).
But mostly it showed us that us three on a two month trip around South America... is going to be an absolute nightmare!
Wish us luck!
