We'd heard really bad things about Sao Paulo, people said it was really dangerous, there is nothing to do and that there's no point in going. But after spending just two days there we definitely have a different opìnion! It is completely a foodie heaven, and we soon realised we'll be eating our way round South America!
We got there late at night so went straight to sleep after a rough bus ride, but got up nice and early for a full day of exploring (mostly eating!) with Mike.
First place we visited was Mercado Municipal, a huge indoor food market selling every Brazilian food imaginable!
We spent a few hours sampling basically everything - these are our favourites:
GARGANTA pastrami sandwich, pau ce queija (cheesy bread), honey roast nuts and gouda cheese, acai ice cream, watermelon and papaya juice, salami, chocolate coated strawberries, ginger and raisons.. you get the idea.
Mike says "with a diet like yours you've got no hope of budgeting".
After that we went to explore the city centre, tried to head towards the monastery but went in the complete opposite direction and found a cool square with a church instead.
Then we headed to Vila Madelena, a funky bohemian neighbourhood with loads of vintage shops and basically places for hipsters to hang out. We found a crazy beer shop that stocked hundreds of different beers from Brazil so had an impromptu tasting session and got a bit tipsy.
We'd heard that Beco de Batman was a cool street with impressive graffiti art so we went in search of it. Came across an incredible cheese shop first and decided cheese was the best way to entertain ourserselves on our next overnight bus. Went in for tasting and came out with an array of cheeses, even included a cheese board! Hipsters travel in style, all we needed now was brazilian red wine.
We got some cool pictures at the graffiti street, but we were mostly excited about the cheese!
We got convinced to go on the hostel night out, one of the guys that worked there was a dj at the club, unfortunately being a Tuesday in low season the gringo party called "2 much fun 2night" was completely tragic and the dj was dire. Never again. You know a night out is bad when you end up having leap frogging competitions over stools and falling asleep in the pizza bar at 3am. Saying that, Mike really enjoyed the trombone and violin battle that was happening over the road (New Yorkers lol).
The next day we wandered hung over down Avenida Paulista in search of food and satisfied our hunger with some amazing gourmet bugers which set us up nicely for our 18 hour journey to Iguazu Falls.
