We left Twizel and set off in the snow to Milford Sound! Luckily the snow cleared up and the weather beacame fine again as it too two days to drive to Milford Sounds it is right at the bottom the south island. Milford Sound is a fjiord in Fiordland National Park & World Heritage Park. It is currently judged the top travel destination in an international survey and is New Zealands most famous tourist destination, it has also been called the 8th wonder of the world so we knew it was going to be impressive. The majestic scenery begins long before you reach Milford Sound, the Milford road is a stunning alpine drive. Snow capped mountains loom 1000 meters above the riad streaked with waterfalls and reflected in mirror lakes. The road climbs steeply into a sub-alpine wonderland at the homer tunnet, we were not expecting this tunnel all of a sudden you see a hole in the middle of the mountain then you are in the middle of it at the end of the tunnel you emerge to an instantly breathtaking view of the canyon which decends in Milford.
We arrived just in time luckily to book onto a scenic boat tour, the boat was huge with a viewing top you could stand on to see the scenery. We went all the way up to the tasman sea and saw huge waterfalls, cliffs and even some New Zealand fur seals. It was a great day glad we had made the journey to Milford. There are other boat tours you can do and you can kayak but we decided to head off back to Queenstown. We set off wondering how earth our camper would make it up the windy roads the journey back was just as impressive and we parked up at a lookout point / picnic area to spend the night.
