We arrived in Nata last night after riding 300 kms along the elephant highway from Kasane. It was a tough 2 day ride due the heat and the lack if amenities and supplies in between. We were warned in advance. What we have learnt is that the danger of lion attack out here is very high. After 6 pm it actually becomes quite probable on the roads we are traveling. After 150 kms of riding at dusk we were plucked from the road by a truck driver who took us to a police checkpoint where it was a little safer to camp due to the noise of a generator frightening the lions. We had quite a few people stop and tell us to get off the road. They wouldn't get out of their own cars due to their own fear of a swift attack. After camping with the police we flagged down another truck to take us back to where we were picked up so we could complete our second 150 kms. We made sure we were off the road prior to 6 pm. Over the past 2 days we have seen elephant, giraffe, African wild dogs, monkeys, goats, donkeys, warthog, impala, springbok and many beetles and insects and birds. It has been an adventure. Unlike Zambia we are seeing more animals than people at times. I have heard there are 5 million animals and the Botswana population is about half of that. We now head off for another 100 kms prior to a rest day near the largest salt pans in the world. (larger than Switzerland) so I have been told. Bike and legs are standing up to the challenge so far!!
