Happy Hippos on Holiday
Hi everyone!
Aussie 'allos from Adelaide! We had less than three days in the state of South Australia, but still managed to pack a lot into our time here.
After checking-in to our hostel, we walked into Chinatown, where Adelaide's lively central market was located. We had a wander around and found a spot for lunch, before heading out to the beach suburb of Glenelg. We had hoped to get the tram there, as it was a highlight recommended by the guidebook, but unfortunately, tram services had been suspended a few days earlier for rennovations, so we had to settle for the bus!
Glenelg was a quaint little place and a pleasant spot to pass a couple of hours. We returned to the city for the evening and treated ourselves to a meal at 'Jasmine's', consistently voted one of Australia's best Indian restaurants, and we could see why...yum!
The following morning we rediscovered a favourite pasttime and took a relaxing stroll along Adelaide's riverside promenade and through its botanical gardens. The afternoon rain dampened our enjoyment of being outdoors and we sought shelter inside the South Australian Museum and the Migration Museum. The former held a variety of geological, zoological and cultural displays, while the latter explored patterns of immigration and exclusion in South Australia - being white and British we'd have had no problem emigrating in the mid-20th century... not so easy nowadays!
Back in the hostel that evening, we took part in a 'killer pool' competition. We made a valient attempt, but were no match for some of the lads, who had obviously spent far too much time at the pool table!
The next day we went on an organised tour to the Barossa Valley wine region. Australian wineries are particularly generous with their measures and, needless to say, we enjoyed ourselves immensely, while at the same time furthering our viticultural education, particularly regarding reds!
On the way back, we stopped at the Barossa Reservoir, whose dam possosses an accoustic phenomenon much like New York's Grand Central Station (Who's the daddy, Matt???!!!). Here you can whisper at one side of the dam and beheard chrystally clear at the other side, 140m away ... cool!
Our clockwise Aussie tour continued the next morning with a flight to Western Australia. Adventures from the Wild West coming soon to a screen near you!
Hope you are all well!
love,
Kirstie & Zena
