Happy Hippos on Holiday
Hi everyone!
'ello from the 'appy 'ippos on 'oliday in 'ua'ine!
Following the Moorea airport transfer debarcle, we were much better prepared in Huahine, and this time, pre-arranged a transfer to our hostel. However, we failed to plan for the fact that all shops shut at 11am (as it was Sunday) and didn't reopen until Monday morning. Fortunately, there were enough restaurants to keep us fed and watered until then.
Sticking to the same routine as before, we headed straight to the beach after checking in to our hostel. Watching the sunset over happy hour cocktails at a waterfront bar rounded the afternoon off nicely...the warm showers at the hostel were the icing on the cake.
Taking the advice of locals, we spent all of the following day at the Te Tiare Beach Resort, the only remaining luxury hotel on the island and which was only accessible by boat. We were delighted to find sunloungers on the beach available for our use. Being practically deserted, we were able to set up camp at the best spot on this, the best beach on the island. Swimming here was a real pleasure - the water was quite deep close to the shore and there was a raft to swim out to and bake on. We treated ourselves to a delicious meal in the hotel restaurant overlooking the beautiful turquoise (etc, etc...you get the picture) lagoon!
As a gentle reminder that we were still on earth and not in paradise we awoke the following morning to the sound of lashing rain. We were appreciative of the fact that this is what makes the island lush and green, but it did scupper our plans to rent a scooter and tour round the island. While sheltering from the rain, we got talking to a group of Americans, who were crewing a yacht across the South Pacific. We all got along well, and they invited us to join them for dinner at the Te Tiare Resort. With the great combination of quality food & wine and the company of new friends, of course we accepted, and spent a really enjoyable evening swapping travel stories.
On the morning of our departure (hostel/airport transfers not being our forte), our taxi did not turn up. Fortunately, the hostel owner kindly offered to drive us to the airport, and we made it in time for our flight to Bora Bora. Tales from there in the next postcard.
Hope you are well!
Love,
Zena & Kirstie
