Hola, I have just had the most fantastic time - I would possibly say the best 3 days of my entire trip. I traveled over the border from Chile to Bolivia, leaving from San Pedro de Atacama and arriving in Uyuni. Six of us traveled in a 4x4, with a driver, through the most beautiful landscape I've ever seen. On Tuesday we left San Pedro first thing in the morning, crossing the border within 30 minutes - the border crossing was mental, just a guy in a hut surrounded by desert. Followed by breakfast in a similar randomly situated hut. We then headed further into the desert - the driest desert on earth - before ascending quickly into the mountains, finally reaching 4500 meters. The views were spectacular; in the surface of Lagoon Verde we could see a perfect reflection of a huge snow capped volcano. The higher we rose the colder it got, by lunchtime it was absolutely bloody freezing so we stopped for a swim in the hot pools, before witnessing the thermal activity of the geysers - I seriously wasted time in New Zealand! Just before the sunset we visited the Red Lake, which was the home to thousands of flamingos and surrounded by dozens on Lamas - you have to see the pictures! The first night was spent in a hostel up in the mountains where the temperature peaked at -15, I'm not kidding! I slept in all my clothes, inside my sleeping bags, covered with at least 5 blankets and I still froze! The second day was awesome although it involved covering many more miles. We stopped to climb up giant rocks, feed a couple of wild desert rabbits (they are so cool), view a few more amazing lakes and climb inside a huge canyon. The second night was spent in the much more pleasant 'Salt Hotel' - yes, everything was made from blocks of salt - Where I ate lama and drank copious amounts of red wine - central heating for kids!! This morning (the third day) we woke before light - to the sound of hundreds of donkeys - so we could view the sunrise from the Uyuni Salare - The largest salt lake in the world, 100km by 400km. The thickness of the salt from the edges of the Salare to the center ranges from 1 cm to 120 meters. For 10 months of the year the lake is empty, so for as far as the eye could see stretched powdery white salt, as white as freshly fallen snow - The most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed! After breakfast we drove across the salt to an Island covered in huge Cacti - the tallest reaching 12 metres! Finally reaching the town of Uyuni this afternoon. The group was fantastic and totally made the trip, Adios ....
