One of the other fabulous things to do out of La Paz is a trip into the jungle. I have to say that it isn't actually the jungle, it is the Pampas, and I am lovingly informed that the difference is that the Pampas is more wetland. The main appeal is you get to see more animals so we went for this one. You fly out to a place called Rurrenabaque where all the tours start. The aeroplane can only hold about 18 people, and you have to basically crawl to get to your seat. It's mental. The view is completely outstanding. The flight only takes 45 minutes, and you fly just metres from the snow capped mountains. You lose vision through the clouds for about 10 minutes, and then as you come out the other side, all you can see is jungle. Its just thick trees, with the huge muddy river flowing through it. You land on a sort of airstrip, which actually is just a big field, and some dude runs out and puts some orange plastic cones down! Very funny. We stayed the first night there and the tour started the next day. We had a fab group of the two English Dans, Jules (Aussey), Alan (Scottish), Emma and Annabelle (English). We had a three hour very bumpy jeep journey, during which we broke down three times. We also ran over a dog we thought was dead, which then leapt up squealing. I hurt a lot of ears with my scream over that one.
We then had a three hour boat journey through the river to our hostel. In this time we saw so many Alligators and Cayman it was unbelievable. We were so close to them.On the last day one was really close to our boat and we were all looking and taking pics and suddenly it leapt out the water.OMG, there were some pretty shaky hands after that! The water is also full of Pink Dolphins, which is pretty impressive, and on the first day they told us just to jump straight in, which was very cool.We spent the evening at the sunset bar, a little way along the river. We then all donned our head torches so we could see all the reflected alligator eyes in the water on the way back. That was pretty fun.It looked abit fake though!Us tourists will believe anything. The next morning, we got on our long sleeves and wellies and went hunting Anacondas in the jungle.I thought it might all be abit of a scam, but it was brilliant. After about 20 minutes one of the guides had caught a huge one. Then we all separated off, and Alan saw a huge one that he caught himself. Then about another 20 minutes later Alan shouted again, but he wasn't sure what it was.Turns out it was a huge huge Anaconda which actually ended up biting him on the knee, and . . . . A bloody Cobra!!The guide went running over and caught the Cobra. After dancing around with it for a while, he managed to catch the head, and people were having their photos taken with it.As you can prob guess, I wasn't one of them.Jules and I were head to toe in mud from running away from the thing when the guide couldn't control it at the start. It was really vicious. We had a really chilled afternoon in the sun and hammocks, then we went looking for the dolphins for some more swimming. We brought some balls this time which was fun!In the evening, it was Dan two's birthday so we all put in all the money we had and bought the other camp out of alcohol. We went to another camp where they had a huge football pitch and volleyball court. The night ended very late after a few games of Ring of Fire, and Dan passed out under the hammocks.I think he was happy! The final day was piranha fishing, which was HILARIOUS!Basically the little b******s are actually really clever when it comes to our fishing attempts.Never to be defeated in fishing, I developed a tactic of standing on the edge of the water, and the second I had the tiniest bite, just pulling as hard as I possibly could.I caught the fish, but it didn't stay on the end of the line, and went flying off over my head into the jungle. This turned out to be the only tactic that worked, so Annabelle and I cracked on with that whilst Dan one just went into the jungle to find the missing piranhas, bringing them back on a big knife, and giving them to Emma who butchered them with the end of a Fanta bottle. They just wouldn't die!It was a great team.We ended up with about 14 in the end all lined up.They cooked them for us later, but there not much meat on a piranha. The Pampas trip ended back in Rurrenabaque in the fabulous Mosquito Bar.Unfortunately it ended at 5.30am for me, and I had to fly back to La Paz at 7.10am.That wasn't the most fun I've ever had.Never mind, we live and learn.
