We arrived in Potosi at about 9.30pm (only about 5 hours late) and had a very lovely hot shower, and headed out with Dan for a few beers. We ended up having a hilarious night f dancing with the locals and making friends with the miners.Potosi is a beautiful town - I was so impressed by it when the sun was shining, although was abit scary at night due to so many small roads and alleys. We went to the top of one of the many beautiful churches and had a perfect view of the city. The main thing to do in Potosi is to go on one of the mining tours. In Potosi almost all the men living there work in the mines, and their wives support that by feeding them all the food they can eat!We went on one of the mine tours and it was one of the most harrowing things I have seen. The miners work in the most horrible conditions. You walk through the tiny tunnels, which are only really big enough to fit the trolleys to carry the ore and a very small person. The mines are dusty and dark and I found this terrifying.I think I had a panic attack whilst I was in the mine.I just couldn´t control my heart beat and I couldn´t talk myself out of it - it was scary knowing you couldn´t just leave of you wanted to.I managed to talk myself into going on, and I am glad I did.We had to climb down two levels in the mine, through some ridiculously tight holes. The miners work 12 hours per day in he mines, and often work double shifts. They work in family groups, and although they pay a tax in accord to how much they mine, they keep the remain of the money for themselves. It must be a really horrible job, and to be in those mines for so many hours. The work is so physical. They eat huge plates and plates of breakfast, and then just work solidly for the time they are in the mines.Potosi is beautiful and crazy at the same time.Almost all the men work in the mines, and start from as early as 12 years old.It can be a dangerous job, and also the massive impact on their lungs from all the dust.We took the miners gifts of dynamite, and soft drinks, and even got to blow up some dynamite ourselves at the end of the tour.I felt so drained by this day, but also think it's a fantastic experience to see this.
