Our Travels
Arrival here was again stressful. We'd decided that given the distance we had to cover to get to Rio within less than a week,we should probably organise our tickets as soon as we arrived. Plan 1...bus...oh no, 3 and a half days from La Paz to Rio. Both of us decided that this was out! So plan 2...plane. Not so easy considering we arrived late Saturday night and no travel agencies opened on Sundays. So, come Monday, we sprinted to the first travel agency we'd found the day before to be told there was no space on the flights. uh oh!! Luckily,we dropped into another next door and this one had space. Huge sigh of relief. Nothing like a bit of drama to end the trip!!
Anyway, La Paz turned out to be a really nice city. On the Sunday there was a market taking over the whole of the main street. And it was not just any old market. There were live bands, street performers and even a driving school for kids!! As well as some really impressive, and cheap, craft stalls.
Monday, after the intial excitment, calmed down somewhat as in the afternoon we took a 3 hour bus-bound city tour that proved to be very interesting and showed so fantastic views of a city surrounded by mountains.
Tuesday was a first for the holiday. It was the first day in over 5 weeks where we started the day planning to do other things. Matt had seen advertised the chance to mountainbike down the 'death road' and Hannah didnt fancy this so we went our separate ways.
The ride down death road was as exhilarating and frightening as the name suggests, and given that this road claims more lives than any other in the world there is no exageration in that name!
Han in the meantime spent a relaxing day shopping, reading and sitting in cafes.
Wednesday morning we fly to Sao Paulo and then bus to Rio for a couple of days in the sun before heading 'home' (for some).
