When we were looking for somewhere to start our trip to US, given we were flying to JFK it was always going to be in the New York area. We looked at places on Upper East side but in the end decided on Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
I had been there years ago to visit my friend, and now organic farmer, Rupert Newton and liked it and we eventually found a three bedroom apartment on Bedford Avenue, right in the heart of it. It's a great place, Time Out accuses it of trying too hard to be hip (a sort of stateside Shoreditch maybe) but we all found it friendly, independent and interesting. Great local shops, vegetarian restaurants (Wild Ginger on our first night was fabulous) in abundance and great bars too.
McCarren Park, which I visited years ago to see a band in the disused pool as part of their summer season was bustling and the pool was now filled with water and functional again - it felt odd swimming with Noah where before I had stood with a Brooklyn lager. The Waterfront was great - fantastic food market and a really interesting flea market too - a bit like Camden in the old days. Definitely a place we will come back to, and the sort of place I could see us living in. That said there are not any US job offers on horizon.
