The 6 hour bus journey to 1770/Agnes Water from Rainbow Beach passed by pretty quickly and we checked in at the hostel around 1.30pm. With the Scooteroo booked we had to get changed straight away as the bus was picking us up at 2pm.. long pants and covered shoes were necessary.
We arrived to an over-enthusiastic team of bikers who tried to encourage everyone to get into their best bad-ass biker character.. leather jackets, black helmets and fake tattoos helped us along the way.. personally I felt more like a jackass!!
We'd be riding in a convoy around the two towns for 3 hours on the lookout for kangaroos and hopefully catch a sunset at the small marina.
I'd never ridden a scooter/motorbike before so I was surprised they were allowed to let us out on the roads even though we would be supervised. Some people didn't even have a vehicle license of any sort and were still allowed to ride. There was about 40 riders in total.
We each picked a chopper.. I went for an advanced bike with high handle bars, kind of looked like a smaller version of a Harley. We were then given a brief talk on how to ride the bikes with a demonstration. Turns out I knew the guy demonstrating from my first week in Sydney doing Ozintro. Dean from Portsmouth had been working there for about a month.. it was good to see him and we had a brief catch up throughout the 3 hours.
Anyway, after the demonstration we had to show that we could control the bike properly by circling a short track. When they were happy we could do so they let us out onto the road.
It was alot of fun especially when they let us overtake and max out the bikes in the faster zones. The bikes only managed up to 45mph but it was still good. We saw quite a few kangaroos before stopping off at the marina for some potato wedges whilst watching the sunset but unfortunately it clouded over so we headed back to the bike shed. Overall it was good fun and we went back to the hostel happy with some funny pictures.
After a shower we got changed and stayed in at the hostel for the free BBQ they had on and went to bed in preparation for another early start in the morning. We've decided to stop off at a place called Kroombit where they have a cattle station. It will take about 5 hours to get there on the bus and we'll be doing various activities such as horse riding, lassoing and shooting. Should be interesting!! :)
The day after that we will be heading to Airlie Beach for our Whitsundays boat trip.. cannot wait!!
