Maybe not Gordon's last trip
I don't know if it is the time or the heat but I may have already written this note so forgive me if it appears twice. I am about to leave for Mumbai airport to spend three hours waiting in the dark of the night for the 5 am plane to Bangkok so I thought I would just put a few thoughts down as I leave India.
MUmbai is too difficult a city to explain in two or three lines but one of my lasting memories will be of the new skyscrapers emerging from the sklyline in the distance as four urchins search in the detritus of the most polluted beach on the continent for something to sell or salvage. And, India seeming to be the most pragmatic and accepting place on earth, everyone, save for a few tourists, passed by without pausing to look at the scene at their feet.
A second memory of the city will be a short visit to the home/museum of Gandhi where the walls are adorned with letters and photgraphs of, and from the great founder of the nation. Ironically, two featured letters are those to FD Roosevelt and Hitler, asking them not to take the world to war. It struck me as particularly poignant that no political, religous or social movement now seems to act without the accompanying sound of explosions. NOn violent protest now appears to be a thing of the past.
Sorry, if I sound too philosophical, must be the effect of the 'East' of the impact of sleep deprivation.
On a more upbeat note I have linked up with my dear friend Mike Grady, here on tour with a Shakespeare play, and spent part of the day walking through the bazaars and eating local food. HIs group seem to be having a good time apart from some of the female members who are constantly being stared at, or in one case, groped in a local market.
Culinary note. Ate last night at a restaurant which should be in the "Guide to great fish eatiers of the world". Trishna........pomfret in garlic butter sauce, squid in chilli, kingfish in black pepper......and much more.
Must go now and lie down for a few hours while I think about what to eat next in Thailand.
