Sun shining but on our own today as our tour guide had to go to work!! So after breakfast we managed to organise our train tickets at DuPont metro - had to change at Metro Central for Capitol South. Short walk from here to Capitol Hill and after going through security at the Visitors Centre were in time for 10am guided tour (free!). It began with a short film called "out of many, one" describing how the US Congress established a new form of government. The tour was incredibly informative and really enjoyable - a remarkable building especially the Rotunda - the heart of the Capitol. An abundance of marble, statues, ornate carvings and amazing works of arts - awesome! So many interesting stories. After a coffee we wandered through the the tunnel to the Library of Congress which is across the road from the Capitol. The Thomas Jefferson building which is the centrepiece of the Library and opened in 1897 is overwhelming. The opulence of its marble, columns, stained glass, sculptures and art works in Italian-Renaissance style would rival anything in Europe. Loved the view overlooking the main reading room and Thomas Jefferson's Library was incredible. He said "I cannot live without books" - and what a diverse collection they are ...and imagine their worth!!!
Dragged ourselves away and down Independence Ave past the Botanical Gardens to the start of the Smithsonians. Decided to have a look through the National Air and Space Museum. Once again a whole day could have been spent here - amazing displays of flight through the ages.
Then walked to L'Enfant Metro and caught subway to Arlington. Subway appears very clean and efficient and really quite modern. The trip to Arlington took us across the Potomac River ( or under it actually) and consequently out of DC and into Virginia. Walked up to the entrance to Arlington Cemetery and took the hour and a half trolley bus tour. A serene and moving setting so picturesque amongst overhanging trees and lawns .....and those acres upon acres of white headstones. First stop is the Kennedy family burial site with plaques for John, Jacqueline and their two infant children - and it's eternal flame. And, nearby Teddy Kennedy's white cross as his memorial is being reconstructed. Then it was on to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and after a 15 minute wait we were able to witness the hourly changing of the guard - much pomp, ceremony and dignity for a memorial that is guarded 24/7. Final stop was Arlington House, once the home of Washington and Revere families. Great views from up here over city, across to Pentagon and various monuments. Besides the house, also interesting to check out Mrs Washington's garden and the slave quarters. On return we enjoyed a stroll across Arlington Memorial Bridge and on Constitution Ave caught a cab back to DuPont Circle. Had a beer and a rest before meeting Barry in the lobby at 7pm. Dinner was at a nearby Italian restaurant called "Tomatae" - most enjoyable salads, pastas and even desserts tonight! Checked out an interesting book shop with wine bar and cafe attached on way home. We were incredibly grateful to Barry for his tremendous hospitality and tour guide expertise!
