Today was quite sombre. We visited the killing fields outside of the capital. It is where the Khmer Rouge took prisoners and murdered them. It was very eerie, very upsetting. The first notable thing was a pagoda, a religious monument which was very tall and ordinary compared to other ones. However this one had layers and layers of skulls. Skulls of the victims, with their rags and bones.
Walking around we saw the mass graves, bones and rags were coming out of the path. We saw the video which told us about how it was mostly people who challenged the regime who was killed. 2 million out of a population of 6 million were killed.
We then went to Tuol Sleng Prison which was converted from a primary school. In bare rooms of torture, there were blackboards for children. In some buildings there were makeshift cells, the size of a telephone box almost. Barbed wire covered the building so that the people wouldn't commit suicide. They were also whipped with the barbed wire. It was a place for interrogation.
