After Antwerp I went to Amsterdam. However I don't think I'm going to make this entry about Amsterdam because in the 3 days I spent there I did nothing at all. One of the girls I had hung out with on that night in Antwerp had gone to Amsterdam they day before I left, so I figured it was a good a place as any to go. I don't know if I was a bit sick for the few days or just couldn't be f***ed, but I really just had no energy to do anything. And I barely even managed to catch up with Briana anyway.
So after a few days of really not doing anything I decided to go to Rotterdam, and that's what this entry will be about. Rotterdam is quite a new modern city, I think having been quite badly damaged in the war and mostly rebuilt. As far as things to do as a tourist is concerned there wasn't a whole lot. For the most part I just wandered around the city admiring the buildings and architecture and taking photos. They had some really cool cube kinda house things around the train station, and an awesome bridge. There was also the Euromast which was a lookout tower thing, but it was stupid expensive and actually quite far from the city centre, so I didn't bother with it.
There was a museum which I did go to. As per usual there was a bunch of art I didn't really understand, but some of which was pretty cool anyway. One exhibit had a few things cut in half such as a motorbike. One cut across ways and another lengthways, both really cool to see what it looks like on the inside. I guess the highlight of the museum was the Salvador Dali stuff and the Little Tower of Babel which is a pretty awesome painting from the 1500s.
So really other than that I just hung out a bit with guys from the hostel, most of whom were American. We went out to some bars of which there were quite a few awesome ones on the street of the hostel. A couple of these guys were going to Amsterdam after this, and I decided I'd follow them and try to do it properly this time. On the way to Amsterdam we stopped in a town called Delft, which is known for being the birthplace of the painter Vermeer (famous for paintings such as the Girl with the Pearl Earing).
There was a museum there with copies of his work (most of the actual works being in other more prominent museums such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. But it explained stuff about his paintings and the techniques he used which was interesting. Also interesting about the town was in a the plaza in the centre, they seemed to be building an arch bridge out of beer cases. It was currently only half down and held up by scaffolding, but it looked interesting. It was a shame we didn't get to be there for when it was finished and the scaffolding removed. They also had a cathedral tower which seemed to be leaning at a very alarming angle.
I'm glad I met these guys because this was a nice little day trip which I wouldn't have done otherwise. It was a nice town and I got to learn about Vermeer, who I had kinda heard of before but really knew nothing about. Then it was on to Amsterdam again.
