This was another place that was pinned on my map rather early after seeing some photos of the place. Cinque Terre is actually 5 small villages along the coast. Each village having buildings going up the cliff faces. We drove from La Spezia to Genoa stopping at 3 of the villages along the way. And what a crazy drive it was.
Most of the time the roads going down to these places couldn't fit more than one car at a time, yet for some reason plenty of people saw fit to drive RVs down there which made for some interesting situations when we came across one heading in the opposite direction. They were very narrow winding switchback roads with some pretty sheer drops in areas. But hey, I survived to write of it, so I guess it turned out ok.
Basically this whole day was a day of scenic driving, scenic villages and some nice places to have a beer or two. Though as seems to be the case in Italy we were more than once turned away from spending money because the locals would rather sleep. A siesta sounds great if you're the one doing it. Sucks as a tourist though. And I'm starting to realise why Spain's, Italy's and Greece's economies are in the s***ter. Maybe if they worked more than 15 hours a week...
Then we arrived at Genoa but I honestly can't remember anything about it. I'm sure we must have slept there though because we had spent the previous night in the car. I don't think we did two nights in a row in the car. Actually, I do remember passing through a few small towns along the way, and they were completely dead. Ghosts towns. Then we came to a tunnel which was one way, but the way changed every 10 minutes. So we had to sit there and way for it to change to our way, then it was this hugely long narrow tunnel. After that were a few more spots like it, not always tunnels. Was extremely annoying. Took like 45 minutes to go a few kms.
Thinking about it, maybe we didn't even make it as far as Genoa and found somewhere else to crash. Doesn't really matter I guess. What we did work out though was that from here we needed to beeline straight back to Lyon to make it back in time to return the car.
