Cape Tribulation
Despite the weather I had a really good time in Cape Trib. The rainforest is absolutely amazing and the trees are like giants! On our way there we visited this habitat centre and got to see yet more Koala's and kangaroos, I even saw some with little Joey's poping their heads out their mothers pouches, it was so weird, they looked like aliens! We also went to some really cool look-out points and walked to a huge gorge. It rained but it was really fun! The just before we got dropped off at the hostel we went on a river trip on the Daintree. We actualy saw wild crocodiles, one of which was 7 metres long! Oh My God, you would not have liked to have been in the water with that beast, he was huge! We also saw some baby ones, it was so cool actually seeing them in the wild!
Once we got to the hostel there wasnt much to do other than play pool, listen to music and drink so thats exactly what we did for two days. I met a few guys who were also staying for a few days so it ended up being a really nice couple of days in the rainforest. On the second day I got up a stupid o'clock to go hiking in the rainforest and learnt loads about how the Aboriginal people lived off the land. We walked up to this huge water fall and down to this river which also was suppose to house large crocs! The guide was showing us plants that were used to make soap out of and showed us how; he also helped us make the traditional tribal paint used all those years ago, and told us stories of how the indigenous people would bury the dead in hollow trees called strangling figs, it was so interesting, yet slightly disturbing. The land was said to be sacred, and there was a face in the rocks under the waterfall which it is thought watches over the landscape. Apparentl,y Aboriginal people are spooked by the forest because there is said to be spirits roaming around; not surprising if all their dead ancestors live in the trees! We were also shown the most poisonous plants in the rainforest, trees that were hundreds of years old and plenty o spiders! But, anyway, I had a really good day, it felt really good to hike again; good practise for New Zealand!
Port Douglas
Port Douglas was so pretty, I am really glad I got to go. The sunwas out the whole day I was there and the beach and the harbour looked so nice. It is a much bigger place than I imagined, and again a place with has many similaities to small towns in the Lake District, despite its palm trees and sunshine! I literally spent the day walking round the charming little shops and touristy places and took photos down by the beach. I only got to spend one day here, but because I wasn't going snorkelling again, or out to the reef it was just enough time!
