We were determined to make the most of the last couple of days in Bali, so after an interesting taxi ride up to Amed - driving past hundreds of people dressed in their Balianese best heading to the temple for a full moon festival, and eventually finding the hotel... we had a quick swim in the pool, checked out the black and beach and the incredible view across to Gunung Agung.
The following morning we had an early start to get up to Tulamben to dive the USS Liberty wreck. Liberty was a US supply ship whih was torpedoed by a Japanese sub in WWII near Lombok. It was towed from there to the beach in Tulamben where the ship's cargo was salvaged. It lay intact (aside from the torpedo hole!) on the beach until Gunung Agung erupted in 1963 when Liberty ended up submerged just off the beach. It was a fantastic dive - loads to see on and around the wreck including a lot of eels, electric clams and a huge school of jacks and well worth the trip up the coast.
To get from Amed back down south we decided to hire a car. Despite being slightly nervous about surrendering my passport in exchange for the car, we set off down the coast road. It was beautiful, but SLOW going on the windy, bumpy road! Going was much quicker once we got onto the more main roads, although there was some major roadworks and we were very grateful for the 4 wheel drive! Eventually arrived in Ulu Watu right on the southern tip of Bali and watched an incredible sunset on the cliffs overlooking the famous surf. Really spectacular and made us both want to get our surfing skills improved!
As we were conscious that we were going to have a very early start if we stayed in Ulu Watu, we decided to head back up to Kuta and find somewhere to stay there. After a few false starts we found an OK place, which happened to be next door to the place that we had stayed at before.
In the morning we headed down to the beach and saw our friends Wayan and Komang and had a swim/surf - perfect way to end our time in Bali!
