Our next destination after Melbourne was Bali and I was excited as hell to meet some of my friends who were joining us there and the thought of staying in one place for 10 days was heavenly. One of my besties (nell, for those of you who know her) however had a mishap in Hong Kong and broke her ankle. I was gutted for her and she spent most of her holiday in a hospital in HK :(
The others made it nonetheless and we stayed in Seminyak. One of the highlights were Balangan beach down south which is a surfers paradise - white sand and clear water. After a few beers Shubs decided to hire a surf board and pretended to be a surfer babe despite not having had single lesson. Hilarious, was like watching Mel B in Bo Selecta! Bintang beer was to die for!
We had a couple of crazy nights out in the Sky garden and Apache reggae bar in Kuta which basically consists of a lot of Aussie bogans! Bali is aussie central. Bali to bogans is like Tenerife to chavs. It were mullet heaven I tells ya!
On the way to Ubud (of Eat, Pray, Love fame) we visited a stunning waterfall, the amazing rice terraces and Mount Kintamani. Jas was very excited about visiting the Monkey Forest in Ubud. When we got to the entrance we saw people coming out with scratches and bites, but Shubs and Jas ventured in regardless. Monkeys were everywhere apparently and the sign saying 'if a monkey jumps on you, walk away slowly' didn't help much either! They got deep into the monkey forest and witnessed a crazy monkey jump up on a guy. Jas brandished his slingshot which he bought as it scares them when you show it, and the monkey jumped off the guy. But then it went mental at them, pacing around them and brandishing its very sharp teeth. Shubs was terrified (and so was jas as he admitted afterwards). It eventually ran off and jumped up on someone else. Soon after shubs was stood under a tree and one of them tried to wee on her. Needless to say that was the last straw and they got the hell out of there. They sat down for a beer (mm bintang) and the woman in the shop behind them started screaming. Next thing you know a SNAKE slithers out of her shop and straight past them, eeeeeek!! It was a truly wild day and they felt like Steve Irwin, crikey!
All the food we had in Bali was to die for! We would recommend Ultimo restaurant in Seminyak for anyone thinking of visiting. Yum!
Onwards to Singapore. Having bought an extra suitcase in Auckland I was ready for shopping on Orchard Road but was bedazzled by what I saw and Singapore broke me! I dragged poor shubs around from mall to mall for a whole day until neither of us could take it anymore. I have never seen anything like it and what I thought I would enjoy became a chore and I just gave up. There's not much in the way of natural beauty in Singapore and so we stuck to the tourist trail guzzling Singapore slings in Raffles hotel, doing the night safari with Shubs friend Sat who was also in Singapore and spending a day at Universal Studios on Sentosa Island (which was actually a really fun day out). We also spent an afternoon at Marina Bay Sands hotel which for architect buffs is a real delight as it consists of three high rise buildings with a boat like structure spanning all of them at the top. I thought I had seen it all in Dubai but apparently not!
We caught an overnight bus to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, our last stop. By now we were tired and ready to chill. Spent a couple of nights exploring KL and seeing the Petronas Towers e.t.c but decided to retire to Port d*** on to have a final few days of chill time by the beach before we head on and part ways and this is where we are now.
I leave to go back to Dubai tomorrow and Shubs has bravely decided to expand her horizons and move to Melbourne for a while and work there. Am very proud of her. This trip would not have been the same without my lil sis and while it will break my heart to say bye to her tomorrow I can't thank her enough for being part of this whole experience with me and making me laugh until I cried. You are the bestest bobo in the world and I love you.
Thanks to all the wonderful people we have met in the last 4 months who have made this a truly unforgettable trip. You know who you are!
So that's it folks, time for the Gill sisters to sign off and say adios. All good things must come to an end but with endings come new beginnings.
