USA 2016
Our flight from Raleigh to London was re-scheduled to depart early and we flew at 35,000 feet which is apparently higher than normal so we could fly at higher than normal speed to allow an early arrival into Heathrow. Southern England had been blanketed in thick fog for over twenty four hours and there was a small window for arrival of planes and we needed to meet it. With the help of automatic instruments we landed with no problems at the early hour of 5.30 am. The darkness and the thick fog with the addition of basically no sleep made London very appealing! However arrival at our hotel provided a very pleasant surprise when they booked us immediately into our room and provided us with a late check out for the next day. How good was that. Sleep was high on the agenda. Early afternoon was time to walk off the effects of flying and although London was still under thick fog we enjoyed stretching our legs and getting out even though it didn't seem very fresh air. We had less than two days for our stopover and had no fixed agenda for the time. We decided that a visit to Knightsbridge and in particular Harrods was a good way to spend some of our time before flying out again. So on to the bus, then the underground and next stop Harrods where we enjoyed browsing but no shopping! Central London has an excitement all of its own and it was good to wander to all those familiar places like Hydes Park Corner. Green Park, Buckingham Palace and St James Park. We really felt we were in London even though it was only a short time. The ideal way to complete our time in London was to relax in a typical London Pub so we spent the next hour or so enjoying a wonderful meal in an upmarket pub close to Knightsbridge. What better way could it be! Back on the underground and bus, collected our bags from the hotel and before we knew it we were sitting on the plane enroute to Singapore then on to Melbourne. After fog in London we arrived to pouring rain and cold temperatures in Melbourne. Where was summer and the warm temperatures we were looking forward too? Two weeks in Melbourne soon disappeared. We were able to spend time with our niece and her family, meet up with lots of friends, have a week-end in Queenscliff with a group of friends, attend appointments and for Peter attend a number of work meetings and spend hours on the 'phone. We love Melbourne and it was great to be back and in typical Melbourne style the weather varied from very warm with temperatures in the mid 30's to others in the early 20's. However, the end of a holiday actually means arriving home, and New Zealand is home to us now. So it was soon the 19 November and we were making our way to the airport for the last stage of our travels - Auckland here we come. It was lovely to have our daughter and grandchildren waiting to meet us, with cuddles all around. Had we really been away seven months! We stayed with the family for a couple of days then home sweet home - two hours driving and we arrived home to our own house. It was good to be home! Our 2015 trip was over, we were home healthy, safe and sound having had wonderful adventures. We still love travelling. Where will 2016 take us?
