th - Bus journey was only a few hours, and on arrival we found a hostel easily enough - we ended up in a 16bed dorm which sounds awful but it really was not that bad - it was all single beds as opposed to bunks so it was nice - everyone had their own space. we spent the afternoon wandering around getting our bearings, and in the evening went for a drink in the Geographer Cafe - we were so excited and luckily it happened to be a really nice bar. we were taking pics of ourselves outside it, think people thought we were a little bit crazy! Some people we had met on the bus came over so we went and had some drinks with them - turned otu to be a late night with us not getting to bed until 2am, the latest in a while but was such a good night - and we were the last to bed in the dorm!
th - woke up at 12 today which was quite impressive as expected to be woken up by everyone else. We headed straight out to do some sight seeing - first stop - we walked along the back streets that the hostel was on and stumbled across the Top Spinning Academy - here the owner gave us a demonstation of using a spinning top and even taught me how to do it - its a lot harder than it looks. The second stop was the Islamic museum - it was really interesting learning about the history and their beliefs. Next stop was the peoples museum - parts of it were really interesting but we couldnt quite link it to Melaka or even Malaysia. That evening we walked up Jonker Walk and found a cute cafe for tea before exploring the market that is there every weekend. towards the end of the evening, we watched a famous Malaysian put a hole in a coconut with his index finger - it was pretty cool. we just watched a movie that evening at the hostel.
th - we were beginning to become pros at sleeping in - woke up just after 11 today. After a full english breakfast! we headed to St Pauls Church and the Portuguese Fortress which were not as spectacular as we ahd first hoped. We killed a little time people watching in the town square, which also happens to be where the crazily decorated trichaws pick up and drop ff people so there was alot going on. Unfortunately it started to rain so we took cover in a nearby shopping centre and ended up hitting the cinema - watched Body of Lies which was really good.
th - We were going to the zoo today so up a little earlier - we grabbed a bus which ended up taking us right around all the housing estates so a 10-15min journey took 50mins! we weer not impressed, anyway we eventually made it to the zoo. We had our picture taken with an orangutan which was the highlight of the day. it was our last night in Melaka so we hired a trichaw for 30mins - we had some Indian music pumping out loud, such a fun ride. we ended our evening with a final drink in th Geographers Cafe!
th - Managed to grab some breakfast this morning before getting a taxi to the main bus station where our bus to Singapore departs from. On the way to the bus station we had 2 near death experiences - the taxi driver reallywas not paying attention, luckily we were fine! the bus journey was also an experience - the bus was leaking some fluid so all the passengers were being offloaded on to passing buses - we were a little worried because the journey involved crossing a border and we no longer had bus tickets for the company we were travelling on we thought there may be a scam involved but there wasnt and we arrived safe and well in Singapore.
