El Calafate is a lovely touristic city. Prices are high and restaurants are well decorated and inviting... it´s so different than being in authentic cities with no specific tourist attractions, but I still like it.
We decided to spend just 2.5 days at this place as there´s only 1 main thing to do - the exploding glacier.
This natural phenomenon is one of the most amazing in the world. It´s a huge glacier, I don´t even know how big it is or how far back it goes (although aerial photos show it´s enormous size). But this glacier is different than others in a way. It constantly ¨explodes¨. Well, it´s not really exploding, it´s more like ¨breaking¨ pieces off into the sea. But it happends all day every day, and when a big chunk breaks off it sounds like a huge explosion. The size of it is incredible and the view is surreal. It seems like an ocean of ice shards that goes on forever.
We weren´t lucky enough to see a big piece fall off, but we heard a lot of explosions and saw small bits (and when I say small I assume it´s dozens kilograms) fall into the water. There was one huge explosion during the 2 hours that we spent there, but it let to a breakage of several chunks instead of a big one.
I had to spend one night at a camping site as there were no hostels available (Adam and Avi had no sleeping bags so they slept on one mattress on the floor at a hostel who was willing to accept them). Luckily Tomas agreed to host me at his hostel... Thanks Tomas!
The second night we spent at a hostel next to the camping ground and the next morning - we left El Calafate to El Chalten.
Onwards to the famous Fitz Roy track! :D
