Cairns - 15th July
We were picked up from Jungle Lodge and got the bus back in to Cairns.About a four hour trip which actually seemed longer, but there was fantastic lush scenery along the way.We had pre-booked a hostel and were delighted to find that it was stylish, clean and comfortable. We walked into town and had a leisurely stroll along the esplanade.Cairns is smaller than we thought, but colourful and lively. There is no beach to speak of, however, there were lots of people in the park sunbathing and the more energetic were jogging or walking along the boardwalk. At the hostel they had a BBQ where we tried Kangaroo - which is a cross between beef and liver and Crocodile - which is a cross between chicken and fish! They also had a couple doing a fire dance show in the courtyard, which was fascinating to watch with the smooth dance movements - which are mainly in the hands and the balls of fire swinging around their heads. Later, the owner went through the different techniques you need to follow to play the didgeridoo, but although impressive, still sounds to us like a massive annoying drone.Whilst, it is not culturally aligned, we would rather they 'didgerididn't'.
