Gibbs Locates
As if Hong Kong isnt mad enough, the US Fifth Fleet popped into town and the place got turned up from 10 to 12 on the insanity level. Wanchai was the place to be if you wanted in and everyone got into the spirit of the madness. The US Navy are always well behaved and enjoy a party without hassle. Grant & myself got into the swing of things...perhaps a bit too much and Grant decided to have a walkabout on his own. We caught up a couple of hours later and he told me he'd been picked up by the SLG ( Formerly Shore Patrol but now called the Shore Leave Group)......as they thought he was in the US Navy and needed accompanying back to the ship.....he'd explained he was a "Limey" and they left him alone. It may have been a bit difficult explaining that one to Mrs. Gibbs, how her son had managed to get press ganged into the US Fifth Fleet.
Sunday, we were a bit fragile as to be expected and so a day of rest was in order. As I said to Grant, it could have been worse, he could have woken up in the brig and I could have had yet another nomination for Parent of the Year. The week has been the usual madness and the Fleet have now headed off to give assistance to the Philippines who have been hit by a monster Typhoon and so Wanchai has calmed down just to a level of 10.
I was looking to see if any of the "Model" bars had changed at all, a few of them had closed down, one in particular which held some fondness was The Panda Bar.....any of the Chaps from Wales who have passed through HK on a Lions' Tour will have had a beer here....it's now gone and that's a bit of a shame as it had been there since the 1960's...most of the ladies had been there since then also...
On a funnier note, the bar called "Popeye" has had a change of name. It appears that some lawyers in the US who had some time on their hands decided to send threatening letters to this girlie bar as regards to their choice of name and that it was breaching their trademark. The baffling thing is that these lawyers could be so bothered about this. Unfortunately the bar was forced to change it's name and so Hong Kong's greatest creative minds were called in to come up with a replacement name. Apparently it took a few weeks, but finally the neon sign was secretly erected and finally the covers were pulled off one night in front of an expectant crowd. Everyone was awed as the new Neon sign was switched on . "Cockeye" is the new name and I think it's fantastic.

Scott Gibbs The landscape of your travels has been vivid . The travel blog in fill colour. The point of any journey is to never arrive and I hope that this is the start of many more for you both. Safe travels home. I wish I was around for the Germcorp Brewery festive Party to hear all the details. Take care and well done. An amazing achievement! Scott
Ian Walby Sounds absolutely brilliant in HK, as always. I still remember Gail taking me to the ’love hotel’, her tall big frame and my skinny self. She arranged the a ’love room’ from 2am till 12 miday for Lucy and I to stay in, at a very reasonable hourly rate. The amusement of the Madame, looking at the size of Gail and then the wimpy size of me - she must of been thinking he’s not going to last an hour, never mind 10 - will probably snap! Point of the story, there were no US navel ships in town and these were the cheapest rooms in Hong Kong. The bed that had the piston driven mattress, the centre went up and down 6", still makes me laugh though! Be great to catch you both in London, our beds have no such contraptions, unfortunately ;-)) Ian.
Big Steve Ah, the old Popeye!!...Is the Country Club 2 still around, I kind of recall James’ stag session may have passed through there. I recall the last encounter I had with the 7th fleet in the early 80’s...that hatched a few stories!!!
Big Steve Ooouu, is the Gaslight still in Wanchai?
Rob Lewis The Cockeye: inspired....
