Gerard's Travels
After a couple of relaxing days, today we decided to do the touristy thing! And what better way to be tourists than by taking advantage of the double deck tourist buses! Yep we are that cool, and after missing out in Paris, we were craving it! And we were sick of walking, and our issues with foreign transport has already been well documented. And this would get us to all the sights. Ok, the real reason was the free wifi on all the buses! We crave wifi, it connects us home, and you'll know when we have it, because it'll be heads down in the phone! So the first thing we did this morning was book our tickets on the bus for the next two days, and headed off to the station which had the nearest stop for the bus. The bus has three different routes taking us to different parts of the city on each, and all up would take about five hours to do all three. Our plan was to casually use the next couple of days to jump on and off all around the city. We got on the first bus and for the next hour it (very) slowly took us down to the coast, where we were going to jump on the coastal route bus. I'm not sure what we saw on the bus (free wifi). At the first stop, we decided to have an early lunch as none of us had any breakfast this morning. It was right on the beach on a sunny day, with restaurants lining the boulevard overlooking a heap of sailing boats, and the Barcelona Casino just a bit down the road. Anywhere else and this place would be packed. But we were in Spain, so it was deserted! We found a nice looking tapas place, sat outside and ordered some food. Daniel and I ordered a five-dish sharing plate. I also ordered cannabis beer! Yes, they had beer that had been infused with cannabis. I'm such a rebel....! It was good though. Our dishes came out, and they were nice, but I honestly don't know how on earth they could be worth the effort. I'm talking about you prawns and scampi! To get to the edible parts we had to remove the head, remove the tail, peel the shell, remove the legs. 28 minutes later, with fish juicy hands and a s***load of mess, we were rewarded with a teaspoon sized piece of meat. How *********. I can't stand peeling seafood, it really ****** me off. Lucky I had Daniel my brother (woah oh) there to do it for me! Still, it's not a very efficient way to eat! Maybe I should've just had another cannabis beer. Other than that, and the anchovies we gave to Dad, the remaining couple of dishes and our teaspoons of prawn and scampi weren't too bad. We went back to the bus stop and changed routes onto the coastal one. For about an hour, it looped us, you guessed it, along the coast and some beaches in Barcelona. So for that hour I snapchatted, saw the News and Age websites, snapchatted, vibered, read up on the team selections for the footy, snapchatted and vibered (free wifi). More seriously this area of Barcelona was pretty nice and modern. They had some enticing beaches, and a lot of redeveloped areas, which Barcelona just seems to do well. Shame nobody was there. Once that loop was complete, we changed back to the other bus to continue it's circuit back into the centre of town. There was a really old quarter of town we hadn't seen before (and I didn't see anyway, damn wifi (jokes)), so this tourist bus was doing its job well! We got to the stop on La Rambla, and Dad was starting to feel a bit sick so decided he was going to stay on the bus and head back to the hotel to rest. Guess that happens when you bring a 60 year old overseas. Daniel and I had other ideas. Utilising the free wifi, we found a pub that was potentially going to show the footy finals tomorrow and wanted to scope it out. We got an address, but couldn't get it up on a map before our bus, and free wifi, pulled away. So we wandered, looking for any pub that might have free wifi so we could find it on the map. For the first time ever, right when we really needed it, we couldn't find one! But we found a pub to sit and have a beer at, while squinting at the screen in search of the street on the maps. Unbelievably, Daniel, who has no sense of any direction whatsoever, found it on the screen, a fact he made sure to rub in. Ok Daniel, you got me. Now good luck finding it on the street p**** He couldn't, but I did. It was just around the corner. It was a bar at the bottom of a backpackers, and boy did I feel like a snob! So do you know what it's like to have your own room and shower? You don't? Oh how horrific! They had a bit of a comeback though because the bar was nice, and it was dirt cheap (€2.50 jäger bombs!). And it looked to have good food (no peeling 99% of the fish away here). We sat down and had a few beers, and asked about the footy for tomorrow, which they said they'd be able to show. I think we may have had a few more than a few, because we were a little bit drunk upon leaving there. We practically had to sprint the few kilometres home busting for the toilet. After that (immense) relief, we both decided we were peckish. Dad still wasn't feeling so good, but Daniel and I had already made up our minds - we were going to the station to maccas! And I tried a Spanish Big Mac. Exactly the same as home, but for the bun being a little warmer! We're so classy! Dad had started to feel better, so we headed up to the roof for a bit as it got later in the arvo. I went right up top to do my relaxing music listening blog thing, while Dad sat down with a couple of friendly Poms and got talking. By the time I got back to them, Daniel was also there, and Dad had already got this bloke, Peter's, number. It turns out he's a massive Manchester United fan, goes to all their games, and said if Dad wanted to tour the ground he could arrange cheaper tickets. Peter was also engaging in banter with Daniel, giving him bucketloads of **** due to the fact he supports Liverpool. Whatever. I had no idea what they were banging on about, and noticed that Peter's wife was well out of the conversation on the other side of the table, so I figured she was probably over the soccer talk, as entertaining as I was finding it (Peter was hilarious). I decided to try and get her in the conversation by asking 'I take it you're not into the soccer?'. She chuckled and said that she wasn't, but didn't really say much more than that, just sort've sat there staring into the distance, dropping her sunnies from time to time! Oh well, I tried! We had a fairly good night with them actually, had some more beers and a bit of food. But my highlight of the night was this; I went to pay my round when it was my turn, which was €21.50. I paid him €22, and when he returned, he gave me €23 change! Bargain beers! Spain just keeps getting cheaper! Word of warning though Spain: paying me money for a large round of drinks will not get you out of recession, just saying! Not wanting him to realise his error with me there, we finished up then and headed off to bed! Our big touristy day in Barcelona (yeah right), done!
