After being stuck in Hanoi airport for 16hours after our flight to Penang via Kuala Lumpur was delayed we had to cancel our planned trip to Penang. If we made the available connecting flight at 9am the next morning it would have given us less then 24 hours there before making our return journey to meet Bobbi's twin Brandon in Kuala Lumpur on the 20th.
Bobbi and I arrived very tired to our hostel in the early hours and slept on their floor until our room was ready for us to check in. After some well earned sleep we started the next step of our travels in Malaysia.
Where do you begin in Kuala Lumpur? There are just so much to talk about in this amazing city, too many places to see, too many fun activities to try out and too many local delicacies to sample.
Bobbi and I decided to check out the numerous shopping malls just minutes walk from our hostel. KL definitely out shines London.. Every shopping mall has more shops then you can imagine and most have a Cinema on the top floor and one even has a roller coaster and theme park!
The day had arrived for us to meet Bobbi's twin Brandon. Once Brandon had settled in we met some others in the hostel and joined them for Ladies night. This meant that all ladies got free drinks all night every Wednesday in most bars in the city. First stop was Sky bar, and from the top floor you had a great view of the Petronas twin towers lit up in the skyline.
After a few too many I was regretting the 9am meet to visit the Batu Caves - January 24th marks the celebration of Thaipusam, a day dedicated to Lord Murugan, the son of Shiva (the destroyer). Thaipusam takes place at the Bati Caves, with processions throughout the day. Devotees, bear kavadis (wooden frames) and carry offerings up Batu Caves' 272 steps to seek blessings, fulfil vows and give thanks to Lord Murugan. More than a million devotees and visitors turn up each year to witness and take part in the ceremonies.
Travellers we had met along the trip had recommended a trip to the Heli lounge bar for sunset. The view didn't disappoint! On the helipad, you get a stunning 360-degree view of KL city. The sunset here is definitely Instagram-worthy, and you don’t even have to use a filter! We were glad we got there early as all the seats were taken by 7pm.
From the Heli Lounge we headed towards the Petronas Twin Towers to catch the fountains at night. This is definitely worth a visit as the fountains light up and 'dance' to the music every half an hour.
If you have any energy left, the night market in Chinatown is a great place to end your day in Kuala Lumpur. At night, the main Petaling Street is transformed into a bustling night market. Hundreds of stalls with all goods, from souvenirs and clothes to traditional Chinese medicine. You have to be prepared to haggle to grab the bargains and gifts. There are also plenty of local bars and cafes if you want to enjoy one last drink and reflect on a perfect day in Kuala Lumpur.
