Our last blog ended with us going to see Lucha Libre....which was quite an experience for these two gringos. Six bucks is the going price to see men and women in speedo´s and masks fake slap and punch eachother. All while a very rambunctuos crowd of Mexican´s (mothers with infants included) yell obsenities at the luchadores. The crowd got hysterical when a midget dressed in a blue gorilla costume flew from the highest rope of the ring to body slam an opponent. Perhaps not the kind of show we would partake in every night, but entertaining nonetheless.
We wrapped up our time in Mexico City and headed to the coastal town of Veracruz. Veracruz is a beach town with a relaxed atmosphere, where people enjoy a slower paced life. Although there are not many other gringos around, we feel safe and welcome here. Walking outside is a bit like being in a sauna, with temperatures reaching near 100 degrees and jungle like humidity. My little Vermont popsicle is melting rapidly!
Our friend Paty works at the Veracruz Aquarium and invited us to stay with her and her husband Dany. The rest of the world could learn a lot from Mexican hospitality. Between behind the scenes tours of the Aquarium, late night karaoke parties, making chocolate, and some darn good eats, they´ve shown us a great time. The Aquarium here is quite nice and has much to offer. They seem to truly walk the talk in terms of conservation. They do amazing things with only four staff in their education department and are quite dedicated to protecting turtles and manatees in the Gulf of Mexico. As Aquarium snobs, we´ve been pleasantly surprised. Tonight we´re off to Oaxaca, which in rich in culture and art, but more importantly the home of our favorite Mexican cheese. Ummm...quesadillas.
