The boat journey from Pak Beng to Luang Prabang took about 8 hours and it was really cold, and i do mean cold. The start from Pai was an early one, but a lot more comfortable than on the way up. We paid for a minibus to take us to Chiang Khong, the border crossing into Laos and then a slow boat on the other side to Pak Beng. Life of Pai, We have really wanted to see rural Thailand, so on a spur of the moment decision we set of to Pai a small provincial village/ town in the north. We took the public bus from Chang Mai which was slow and uncomfortable. Partly because the air con broke down 5 kms into the trip and none of the windows opened. After we enjoyed the history of Ayuthaya. we decided to stop off at Sukhothai for even more history as this was the original capital of Thailand where the Thai alphabet as well as much of its culture was developed.
