WEDNESDAY 13TH DECEMBER - FRIDAY 15TH DECEMBER 2006

set out on minibus from Chiang Mai to the thai-laos border Huay Xai where we stayed the night. Then got a slow boat down the Mekong river which took all day to reach Pak Beng.Were crammed like sardines but the scenery more than made up for it! Went for a group curry which was lush & got offered a place to stay should we ever visit Vancouver (how'd u like those apples Rich????) Stayed the night then took then went further down the Mekong until we reached Luang Prabang.

SATURDAY 16TH DECEMBER 2006

Hired bikes for the morning and explored the town which has to be said is absolutely beautiful - very French-esque! Hit a couple of temples - one in particular was at the top of a huge hill and had panoramic views of the city, the river and the mountains! In the afternoon we went to the Kuang Si waterfalls by tuk-tuk which were breath-taking. Its loads of waterfalls with different levels that you can swim in. I was nesh though 'cause it was freezing but Gaz went for a swim (for all of 10mins). Was amazing though - would recommend it. Went to a night market which was v. diferent to the ones in Thailand - less garish & in your face with fewer people begging you. 1st impressions of Laos are really good. Gaz had a sauna which he says was completely different to anything he'd ever been in.
