I drove down to Port Maquarie with a little time to spare, so when I saw the signs for 'R12 Tourist Drive to Port Maquarie' I decided to follow them, after driving for about forty minutes I came to a T junction in each direction was a sign 'R12 Tourist Drive' after about three of these fantastic directional signs I ended up lost and fairly low on fuel, so did a U turn.Australia is great for a lot of things but sign posts it isn't.
Like most towns my first chore was to find somewhere suitable to camp, preferably free and if possible I do like room with a view.I drove up through the north end of town, where I found the very pos houses with their own jetties out in to the harbor for their yachts. As lovely as it was I didn't really think my camper with its lairy graphics would fit in amongst the Mercs and high end Holdens.
The south side of town was equally as wealthy but was also home to a lighthouse which had a car park that met all of my criteria.I had a cup of tea with the locals and watched the sunset and the full moon rise before having dinner. One lady who had been down on the beach taking photos of the moon warned me of a suspicious couple on the beach that had been watching her with her camera. After night fall two cars raced up with four lads looking for Port Maquarie Light House which clearly stood behind me (II mean I thought that was the whole point of a lighthouse), if containerships could see it forty miles off shore I'm sure these the group of dumb Aussies could see it at the top of the hill 100ft from where we were standing.I would have dismissed all this, but the fishermen were wearing those all in one forensic suits that just lend themselves to well to hiding clues in a murder case!It was only 6:15 but with my mind working overtime I decided to move to a proper campsite, just in case! After all it was a full moon and it does strange things to folk.
