After the mountain biking we drove up to Gisborne, which is on the North East Coast of the North Island and is the first City in the world to see the sun rise.We have been doing a lot of the driving during the evening rather than going to the pub or watching a DVD in the van, as you get to maximize the stuff you do during the day.
The drive took us longer than expected, so we arrived fairly late.We made a drastically poor assumption that the sun would rise off the coast of closest to the city, so we parked on the beach. The beach which was also Captain Cook's landing point when he discovered New Zealand.Unfortunately the beach faced East, and of course the sun rises in the West in the southern hemisphere so despite getting up at 6am, we didn't get to see the sun until ten o'clock!Still I saw it before any of you so Nerr!
We did a whistle stop tour of Gisborne, saw all the Captain Cook monuments, got some breakfast and headed South down the coast to Napier.
