Adventures of Gamblegirl - Another Theatre Review - The Producers
Production: Mel Brooke's "The Producers" at the Princess Theatre
Staring: Reg Livermore (the gayish guy from Better Homes and Gardens on channel 7), Tom Burlinson (The Man From Snowy River - the movie that is) and BERT NEWTON!!!!!! Woo hooo. Dunno if I have ever mentioned this but Bert's my cult idol!!
The Plot: A producer's play closes on opening night and in a bid to make money on a tax write off, the producer must deliver the worst show ever. The show - a musical about Hitler (yes a lighthearted subject from my memory!!!)
Seating: Am still cut about this. Was okay, but really bad architectural design. Sure we had a balcony over our heads but did it need the drape over bit at the same time? Kinda blocked some of the view.
Verdict: I love Mel Brookes. I love his sense of humour. Personally I think that "Men in Tights" is just well hill-ariously funny. And there is definitely in-house jokes and references to his movies in this musical. Reg Livermore is brilliant and Tom Burlinson has a great Sinatra-like voice which is great and does a great job in the role he's in. Bert naturally - well is brilliant!!! I can so understand why he has remained in the spotlight for so long because he has stage presence. But to me, it's the actual production of "Spring Time For Hitler" that is beyond brilliant. It's so fabulously camp and OTT that it's a scream. Naturally being a Mel Brookes production it insults everyone of every gender, nationality, sexuality, religion and race so amused me greatly. Covered all basis for me really.
So if you are in Melbourne, go see it and if it comes to your city else where, highly recommended it. Mind you - it might not have Bert in it. Possible replacement - Kamahl??!?!?
Love and kisses from your neighbourhood freak!!!!
