Night location: Rome, Italy
A clear, clean, sweet day in a good world in the midst of our living.
One of our favourite things about Rome is that you can walk everywhere. The early morning in particular is fantastic as the crowds are yet to descend on the old city and you can meander at your leisure. After a simple breakfast we enjoyed a Sicilian cannoli at the bar of Vitti (one of our favourite cafes) before making our way to the Trevi Fountain that was bathed in sunlight and glistening after an extensive restoration. It was reasonably peaceful as the tour groups were only just beginning to arrive so we sat beside the strikingly blue water and took it all in.
We continued across the city via Amber's favourite earring shop to Campo Di Fiori and the fresh food market. The incredible variety of fresh produce and the loud Italian characters make this market a memorable experience.
Close by, David found the Antico Forno Roscioli, a bakery that he had read about in the recent Italian issue of Gourmet Traveller. He emerged smiling proudly with a large plate with two types of freshly made focaccia and suppli (a Roman version of arancini). We sat in a mildly derelict park and enjoyed his selection.
Having regained our strength we crossed the river and walked through Trastevere, a charming medieval district of Rome with quaint cafes and shops. We then ascended one of the seven hills of Rome (up some death steps) to the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, built in 1612 to mark the end of a major aqueduct. David was tempted to dive straight in but was restrained. We learned later that it was made illegal for residents to bathe in the water in 1707 so luckily he showed some decorum.

Althea Halliday What an elegant piece of prose! And with what power do the words from Cloudstreet go ringing through the years! In fact, the charm of the language resonates with the charm of the old city, and once again we can imagine what you are seeing. And there you were again at the Trevi Fountain, the place where we threw coins over our shoulders and made secret wishes. What an exquisitely beautiful place. Back here in Sydney, the wedding was beautiful, and now I am waiting in the Town Hall for Nanna to arrive in her taxi so she can enjoy the Sydney Male Choir concert. She looked entirely glamorous at the wedding yesterday.
