Night location: Elounda, Greece
After a leisured breakfast and a reasonably slow start, we decided to go on a drive over the mountains to the south coast of Crete. The winding mountain pass offered spectacular views of the sea and the rocky hills were dotted with olive trees. We stopped in the seaside town of Ierapetra for lunch before making our way back to the resort for some more rest and relaxation.
Edith had another spin in the shark. She likes rides both in and out of the water evident by her learning to hold on in the golf buggy.
In the late afternoon we ventured out to the town of Plaka which is an elegant village full of seaside tavernas and shops selling art and ceramics. The town overlooks the island of Spinalonga which was established as a leper colony in 1903. We sat down to a delicious dinner at The Carob Tree and found it hilarious when the waiter brought an extra table due to the amount of food we ordered! Fortunately he clearly underestimated how much Edith loves Greek food, particularly Fava, a mashed yellow split pea dip. As we walked back to the car a full moon rose out of the sea behind the island which was just beautiful.
