Night location: Helsinki, Finland
For our final leg of this incredible holiday we are visiting three countries in six days, starting with Finland! Leaving Russia was bittersweet as we all feel as though we have so much more to see, and that's only in the two major cities, let alone the vast countryside beyond that! Yet, it was definitely a relief to pass through customs at the train station, and then through the prolonged passport control on board our train, without any major questions or concerns.
The contrast between Saint Petersburg and Helsinki was immediately apparent when we arrived at the central station. Shop windows artfully displayed their goods and wide pedestrianised streets made walking from the station to our hotel both safe and easy.
On our flight between Crete and Russia, David and Amber read a brilliant article about Helsinki in the Aegean Air onboard magazine. As a result, David booked a table for two at Nolla, the first zero waste restaurant in the Nordic region. We have had some exceptional meals on this trip, but tonight's is right at the top of the list. Amber had a five course vegetarian menu while David had the traditional five courses, and they both enjoyed an additional cheese course. It was easily one of our favourite dining experiences ever.
Meanwhile, after a short rest at the hotel, Gareth and Gemma put Edith back in her carrier, much to her disgust, and headed out into Helsinki to explore. Their first stop was the Cathedral of Helsinki which was stark and white compared to the intricate and colourful cathedrals that we have seen in Russia. Across the road from the cathedral is the National Library of Finland that was founded in 1640 and has been housed in its current building since 1845. The old part of the library has an impressive barrel ceiling and three tiers filled with antique books. What was really nice about this library was that it is a working library. There were many studios with people in the reading rooms taking advantage of this quiet space in the middle of the city.
Gemma and Gareth also went to one of the recommendations that was featured in the airline magazine called Soi Soi, a vegetarian restaurant with food that was simple but delicious. Edith sat on the table and enjoyed the fried potato and the freedom from the carrier.
So far the culinary scene has been excellent in Helsinki and we are looking forward to exploring more of this city tomorrow!

Althea Halliday We have to hand it to the Fins! Not only are they at the cutting edge in education, but here they are with a waste-free restaurant that is right up there with the best of the best. And how good is it that Edith is eating anything that is set before her. Happy exploring!
