Froggydingoadventures
It has taken us a while to let you know what we have been up to but , hey we are on holiday!!! So since we last managed to get close form an internet cafe, we have a been travelling a fair bit as far as crossing 2 and a half countries. Apparently, internet cafes are like Irish bar but this isn't so.
Since we last left you in Mancora, we have managed to get to Hunchaco ( in one piece )by learning the hard way not to take the last 2 seats in a bus in SA. Basically, we ended up doing the journey with our knees up into our chest.
Huanchaco was really nice but got the water of the sea was cold and not drinkable as Steph found out after 3 days of running to the toilets. And as far as the surf goes,as usual we sould have been there the week before ! It gave us the opportunity to visit Chan-Chan (made by the predecessors of the Inca: the Mochica).
We finally made our way down to Nasca by stopping one night in Lima. While in Nasca, the only thing to do is to check out the lines and leaves asap. Best way to see the lines is taking a nausiating flight in a light airplane made worst by our guide who only knew two english phrases. "Look can you see it know" and "Under the wing". That repeatet constantly for half and hour with the PA on the plane stuck at full volume made our flight memorable. Proud to say the spew bag remain empty. All in all quite a laugh.
Next part of the tour included a trip to the cemetery to life our spirt. Then finally the day in Nasca ended with display of ancient pottery and gold mining technique along with the hard sell of merchandise from shopowners (who looks like our guide relatives). Been there seen it one day was ample.
Next adventure was going to be Arequipa and Colca Canyon but thanks to the locals who know stuff about the weather, the Colca Canyon was out of the question due to overnight rain becoming the 'Colca Damn'.
Missing the canyon, we flew to Cusco thinking we'll try again later. Got to Cusco which is really nice but dangerous place when trying to stay under budget. Lots of free drinks passes, lots of night clubs, everyone is your amigo(a) and swams of 5 years old kids pickpocketing gringos exiting theses clubs. No problem for Lee as is wallet is still in Ecuador ! We loved it.
We managed to dry out long enough to do some day activities. Best way to start was 4 days off trekking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. Believe it or not, we made it and credit to Scruffy for being the only one to be carried the whole and the most liked by everyone.
After Machu Picchu, we caught the slowest train in the world back to Cusco.
As Australia Day was close, we thought we'd hang around, catch up with friends and try guinea pig (not recommended but at least we can say we tried it!).
A transport strike prolonged our stay in Cusco and we ended up doing horse-ridding and white water rafting to stay out of trouble.
First available train back to Arequipa for the second attempt of the Colca Canyon. No success. 12 hours waiting over night in the bus terminal to find the busses fully booked. Standing room only for 6 hours. No thanks. First bus to Puno to relax by Lake Titticaca.
But just our luck we arrived the day before the biggest folk dance festival of the year. Steph managed to find her dancing shoes and joined in, meanwhile Lee's two left feet took some photos.
Still needing a rest, we made a break for 'Amantani' a tiny island on the lake. No electricity and the only place to stay is with local families in their homes. Quechan beight their first language, spanish second, english none and Lee's spanish forget it!!! But we were saved by yet another festival, everyone on the island had been drinking "heavily" with the expection of our hosts. Worried for our safety 'Gladis' and her dad searched town for the three of us, only to find us having the time of our lives with the locals. Simon (one of our travelling partner) and Lee even managed to have trumpet lessons on the way back to the village.
