So we found lake kerkini which is just south of the border with Bulgaria. It is a huge lake and totally unspoilt . We saw huge numbers of birds including pelicans, wintering flamingos and even an eagle. It was really spectacular. We crossed the border without any problems and headed for the little town of Melnik. It was lovely with an amazing landscape of sandstone hills . They are known as the pyramids. We did a fabulous walk up the canyon right up to the top about 4 kms. Then we drove up to the top to the monastery and spent a night admiring the views. From there we went to Bansko a ski resort and spent time at the top of the ski run and walked higher up to 1900 metres. Great!!!!
In keeping with past experience we started to have problems with freddy. first we had no reverse gear for a few days which was interesting! And then the other gears started to play up. We got in touch with the 4x4 club and we are currently sitting in a garage on the edge of Sofia waiting to see what the damage is!!!!!! Could be we are in an hotel tonight at least we will get a shower!!!! The first for over a week!!!!!!!! We have only spent 9 nights on a campsite since we left home. Saving money at least!!!! There just aren't any open at the moment and in any case there is so much gorgeous empty landscape. Last night we were at the Rila monastery which is truly stunning. Look it up and see!!!!!!!
