After a good few hours body surfing with Glen and Sam in the biggest waves I've ever been in, we had a relatively short and sweet bus ride from Noosa to Rainbow Beach that only lasted a couple of hours! We didn't do so much that evening and we had a quiet and early night in too in prep for Fraser Island - the worlds largest sand island and a world heritage site. The next day we checked out the beach for a bit, did some organising and then, that afternoon, had our briefing for our 4x4, camping expedition to Fraser Island! It covered the hazards of driving on sand, how to drive on sand and how to avoid dingos (wild dogs on Fraser known to attack humans)! We got to meet our group we would be driving with and hanging out with for the next few days and everyone seemed cool - Hanne, Eileen, Ivor, Richard and Oceil! Early the next morning, we had free pancakes for breakfast, which was a blessing, after getting our stuff together in the cars and another briefing, we set off! We saw a dolphin on our 10 min cruise across to the island and then cruised off to our lunch stop! Throughout the 3 days, we had rationed food which we were responsible for - it was really good food and there was plenty of it! The first stop was Lake Mackenzie which was a huge lake, very clear and full of turtles - one of the guides even managed to handle one and show us all. We also managed to spot a kookaburra and a few native dingos - we're getting good at spotting these Aussie animals now! On the way back from LM, it was both our turns to drive. Luckily, there were no animal or human casualties and it turned out to be pretty fun tanking through the muddy tracks in the middle of a rainforest and going flat out on beaches, if slightly bumpy. We felt like Indiana Jones/Lara Croft! That evening we arrived at a dingo proof camp site with our tents already up - nice one! That night we had stir fry and chatted round the campfire. The next day, after a scrambled egg brekkie, we set off for Indian Head, getting some great views of the island from a high cliff point. Later on, we visited other major Fraser Island attractions including the Maheno shipwreck - an abandoned shipwreck site that could once hold thousands of people, Eli Creek - a fast flowing stream where you could float downstream and even drink the water, and Champange Pools - rock pools you could have a dip in, as the waves crashed over the side it caused the water to fizz giving a 'champagne' effect! A jam packed day. We also spotted gigantic spiders - 'orb spiders' that spun huge webs from tree to tree! We truly were in the wild! We retuned to camp and cooked up a steak meal and did the same as last night. On our third day we had a walk to Lake Wabby, a lake situated between a rainforest and steep sand dunes - a combination unique to FI! We all swam and grabbed some lunch and headed back to the ferry that took us back to the mainland where we drove back to the hostel! A tiring but a special, really fun trip. Very enjoyable! After a $6 burger and fries meal we said farewell to everyone and boarded our hour late 14hr night bus to Airlie Beach hoping our exhausting ventures would compensate for the unspacious bus and send us straight to sleep. Apparently not...
