After breakfast we walked across the road from our hotel to where the medieval York city walls were located. I walked up the stairs to the top of the wall, but Anthony stayed below not believing there was anything worth seeing.
At the top I was able to walk from one tower to another, arriving at one of the old city gates. I walked down the stairs, through the gate and back around to where I started. Anthony was gone. I wandered around looking for him to no avail, so I set off across the bridge to the York Castle.
York Castle is a fortified complex (over the last nine centuries) of castles, prisons, law courts and other buildings on the south side of the River Foss. There was a museum, of course, so I went in. One of the highlights was a recreation of a Victorian shopping street. It felt like Diagon Alley in Harry Potter!
I walked back to the hotel and found Anthony (who had just returned as well). Apparently he decided to walk up the tower walls after all and while I was walking around the base looking for him he was up on the wall looking for me.
We drove around York for a bit of last minute sight seeing before we set off for Sheffield. As we got closer to our destination we saw a sign for Sherwood Forest - so we changed direction and set off to find Robin Hood.
We visited Edwinstowe and found a fantastic old style, but modern gourmet butcher. Anthony had a delicious sausage roll as we chatted with the butcher. We also discovered that Robin Hood and Maid Marion were allegedly married in this town.
We went for a walk through Sherwood Forest and saw some squirrels before arriving at the "major oak". This was a very large, famous, old oak tree propped up to keep it standing!
Our next stop was Sheffield. This was a much larger and much nicer city than we anticipated. We drove through the centre and up one of the fancy streets to the spot the GPS thought we were going to.
I said to Anthony that this spot didn't look like the right place as it was nothing like my google explorations! So I searched through the device and found what I thought looked like the right place. It was! The Norfolk Arms Hotel was up a hill on the road out to the countryside. It overlooked the city of Sheffield on one side and the Peak Region on the other.
After checking in we settled in the beer garden - a lovely grassed area with a fantastic view with gorgeous sunshine! A young local couple with three children sat near us and we had quite a long chat. They were lovely easy going people and it was nice to see the children running around the grassy area in front of the distant view. It brought back some lovely memories.
