We woke up this morning to a clear, but overcast day - still a bit chilly (14 degrees), but nothing the cardi can't fix. The view of the loch from our B&B was outstanding - crystal clear reflections reminding me of Hobart.
Breakfast was so good we didn't bother with lunch (even Anthony!!). Freshly baked scones, tipsy grapefruit, the thickest and tastiest bacon I've ever eaten, egg, mushrooms, tomatoes... Our host gave us some tips on some scenic drives and we left to travel the path of the Hogwarts express. On the way to Mallaig we travelled alongside Loch Eil, through Glenfinnan and past Loch Eilt. We saw the viaduct and the beautiful scenery and beaches of the village of Morar (not to mention the cutest golf club).
At Mallaig we were planning to get the ferry to the Isle of Skye and when we asked for advice we were met with that scary answer to our peak season question: "have you booked?". We elected to go on 'standby' and phew, we got on the ferry.
The countryside continued to stun and amaze us. It is so beautiful and majestic. Every turn in the road continued to show more and more dramatic views. The mountains are so close.
Finally, we got to an old castle. Somehow we just seemed to miss each one along the way (I'm sure it wasn't deliberate!). Eilean Donan Castle stood at the junction of yet another three lochs. While starting out around the 1300's it was in ruin for 200 years before being restored/rebuilt over 20 years early last century. It was fascinating to walk through, but made me appreciate modern living!
After another hours drive through the continuing beauty we arrived at our hotel for the night in Fort Augustus overlooking the start of Loch Ness.
Our hotel is an old 1800's style hotel with a grand staircase and tartan carpet. It has seen better days, but the lounge area has comfy chairs and a lovely view across cow filled fields to Loch Ness. A glass of wine and a local beer helped us while away the time until dinner was served...
