We had a lovely sleep in before taking off for today's site seeing. We headed off in the opposite direction from what I thought was the right way. After a brief discussion we decided to part ways for the day. As Anthony had now increased the distance he feels he needs to walk ahead of me I didn't feel this was any loss. Anthony complained that I walk too slow and on top of that every time he turns around I've stopped to look at something! Apparently it is not appropriate to view sites when you are site seeing - you must run along to keep up with Anthony so you can have a 5 minute stop at the next 'site'.
I walked back past our hotel in the opposite direction and stopped for some breakfast. I just had an egg and lettuce roll - not very German, but cheap. I then took off again towards Checkpoint Charlie. Another Ferrari flew past.
There was a display with old photos with information on various events from the end of World War II to the fall of the wall. It was quite interesting and strange that the Soviets thought it was ok to build a wall to enforce their control and ideology over the East German people. I think Donald Trump needs to look into how successful building a wall is: it didn't work for the Soviets either.
There was a mural which was removed from the wall of the home of Leonid Brezhnev (General Secretary of the Communist Party). It was originally supposed to be a memorial to him but was moved here in 1993 to the entrance of a house honouring the people persecuted by him. There was also a section of the Berlin Wall on display next to the mural.
Next stop was the Jewish Museum. This was a very modern building with lots of thought provoking architecture and some really good history of the Jewish people. They certainly have been oppressed even before Hitler decided to murder them all.
I find it really sad that people today continue to blame bad times on "different" groups. I see repetition of this through comments such as "foreigners are taking our jobs". Those in positions of power and influence should consider taking the time to educate the masses on reality, otherwise discrimination of groups based on race, skin colour, religion or other grouping will continue and no one will be better off.
After spending a couple of hours in the museum I stopped for a snack before heading back to the hotel to rest my weary feet!
As we had a fabulous little balcony with a view, we decided to spend some time listening to some music and watching the world go by. A Lotus drove by.
I can't believe how many expensive cars are driving around this city, in 24 hours we've seen three Ferraris, a Lotus, a Maserati and countless Porsches, BMWs and Mercedes. Mind you the Mercedes are the taxis!
